Beauty for the Boys; Vol 2. – The Art of Shaving: The 4 Elements of the Perfect Shave Starter Kit

Hello Readers!

I got a fantastic response to my first Beauty for the Boys post with my SO, Eric, reviewing Jack Black’s Beard Lube. If you missed that post, check it out here. This month, my brother Robert, volunteered to review a product. I gave him a few options to chose from, and he settled on The Art of Shaving: The 4 Elements of the Perfect Shave Starter Kit. The Art of Shaving: The 4 Elements of the Perfect Shave Starter Kit is comprised of 4 basic steps that are supposed to give you “the perfect shave”. Sephora claims the following:

Your shaving system becomes a pleasure instead of a chore with The 4 Elements of the Perfect Shave™ Carry-On – Unscented, brought to you by The Art of Shaving® experts. With unique blends of botanical ingredients and 100% pure essential oils, these shave-perfecting formulas are ideal for men with sensitive skin, ingrown hair, razor burn, or tough beards.

The set can be purchased for $25.00USD online at Sephora and includes the following:

  • 0.5 oz Pre-Shave Oil
  • 1 oz Shaving Cream
  • 0.5 oz After-Shave Balm
  • Shaving brush

Robert chose this of all the choices I gave him because in all honesty, he was intrigued by the brush. The brush is something that you don’t come across often today, and I guess it can carry a bit of nostalgia with it.

When the package arrived from Sephora, I immediately noticed a problem when I opened up the box. Somehow the Pre-Shave Oil had leaked and it was seemingly all over the inside of the packaging. When I took a closer look at it, there didn’t seem to be any noticeable loss of product, but it was just a pain to clean up. During the clean up I also noticed that ‘Unscented’ was a lie. I feel like whenever a product says its unscented, it is always a lie. This stuff definitely had a scent, kind of like Sandalwood or some other kind of manly smell. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it was unexpected.

What Robert Thought:

It was comical watching Robert try to use the kit for the first time. He seemed kind of confused regarding where to start, if he was supposed to wash off the oil, how he was supposed to use the brush, ect. Once he figured it out, the brush was actually pretty cool and fun to use (as much fun as shaving can possibly be).  I think he used it a few times but did not notice any difference in using the products from the kit compared to using the cream shave he had already uses. He thought that the pre-shave oil, and the after-shave balm were just two unnecessary steps as those products are already formulated into most shave products today. Overall, I don’t think he would recommend it to anyone, and neither would I. First, it was quite expensive just for a couple bottles of product and a brush. Secondly, it was fun and new for the first use, but after that you realize that all it really does is add 5 minutes to your shaving routine.

If you are thinking of buying this for your SO or any other guy in your life, skip it. I can guarantee that he would appreciate a gift card to Game Stop much much more.
